What is psoriasis?

Psoriasis is an auto-immune skin condition that causes the skin to develop rashes with inflamed, itchy, and scaly patches most commonly found on the elbows, knees, scalp, lower back, face, palms, and soles of feet.

Psoriasis according to Traditional Chinese medicine

Psoriasis, termed “Silver Scale” in the TCM world, is named after the layers of scales typically found in this condition.

This perspective identifies the root cause of psoriasis as a pre-existing deficiency in Qi and blood preventing nourishment in the skin from within.

TCM practitioners come up with a specialized treatment plan depending on the location and severity of the condition.

This forms a basis of diagnosis to determine which acupuncture points to use and what herbs to recommend.

Regardless, the goal of any treatment for psoriasis from the TCM perspective is to reduce inflammation via heat and toxins, improve hydration, and minimize symptoms through nourishing the skin topically

They also recommend eating a well-balanced diet to support healthy gut and digestive function to boost the supply of Qi and blood. “Qi (pronounced “chee”) is like your body’s internal battery.

A fundamental precept of TCM, the word translates roughly to “life force” or “vital energy.” Qi circulates throughout your body along pathways known as meridians, which connect all the organ systems.

Acupuncture and acupressure help restore Qi by treating specific meridian points throughout the body.”

Psoriasis according to modern  western medicine

Treatments from this clinical perspective depend on the severity of psoriasis and the affected area.

Initially practitioners will start by prescribing a mild treatment which is typically a topical like a corticosteroid.

If this treatment isn’t effective, they will move on to stronger treatments including oral medication, injections, and infusions.

Sometimes these treatments will be used in combination.

They also recommend phototherapy which involves exposing the skin to UV light on a regular basis.
