Acne can be VERY frustrating and can sometimes seem like a never-ending challenge. While there are countless conventional products on the market promising to treat acne (many containing harsh and even questionable ingredients), it is comforting to know that there are natural options entering the spotlight that have been shown to be effective competitors at treating acne.

Black cumin seed oil, known for its potent healing properties, has the potential to be a powerful contender in the battle against acne. The compounds present in this oil have been found to offer antibacterial, antiviral, antifungal, anti-inflammatory and wound healing [1] benefits to the skin.

For those looking for a safer alternative to conventional (over the counter or prescribed) acne treatments, black cumin seed oil may be a great option!

What Is Black Cumin Seed Oil?

Black cumin seed oil, also known as Nigella sativa oil or black seed oil, is derived from the seeds of the herbaceous N.sativa plant. Medicinal use of Nigella sativa oil dates back thousands of years!

Much of black cumin seed oil’s biological activity comes from thymoquinone, the main active compound present in the oil. This biological active has been used to treat a wide range of medical ailments including “asthma, hypertension, diabetes, inflammation, cough, bronchitis, headache, eczema, fever, dizziness and influenza” [2].

Black Cumin Seed Oil Benefits for Acne

A study was conducted with 93 patients to test black cumin seed oil’s effectiveness as an acne therapy. Acne vulgaris severity was scored as mild or moderate acne based on the number of papules and pustules present during assessments. Group A, which included 47 patients, used a 10% black cumin seed oil lotion topically twice a day for 2 months. Group B, consisting of 46 patients, applied lotion without black cumin seed oil in the same manner. At the end of the trial, those using the black cumin seed oil formulation (group A) showed a significant reduction in acne severity compared to group B, the control group. The overall results of the study proved that black cumin seed oil can be an effective topical therapy for acne vulgaris [3[.
